Settlement Achieved at Long Last

SFL Calls for Federal Action on Violence Against Women
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, December 6th, was created to honour the memories of 14 young women who were killed in the Montreal Massacre. The women were murdered 17 years ago at the Ecole Polytechnique because they were women.

New Hours of Service Regulations will break the bus industry
Amended hours of service regulations in the commerical vehicle drivers industry are scheduled to take effect in January 2007, "with serious consequences for workers, small businesses and the public," says Larry Hubich, President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.

Hubich challenges Ching to a public debate on Northern Overtime Exemption
A recent report from the Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation quotes Don Ching, president of Areva, as saying that his company "has put a lot of time and effort into collective bargaining agreements with the union covering the mining workers", and that a change in the legislation would be a "huge disruption" for his company.

SFL welcomes training announcement
Premier Calvert and Minister of Advanced Education and Employment Pat Atkinson announced today an additional $22.3 million designated for training opportunities. Saskatchewan Federation of Labour president Larry Hubich called the new funding "a positive investment for the workers of this province. The addition of 2,500 training opportunities for Saskatchewan citizens will encourage young people to put down roots in the province."

Forbes Takes Heat at SFL Convention
Minister of Labour David Forbes endured 45 minutes of questions from union members at today's Convention. Delegates took the Minister to task for poor enforcement of occupational health & safety contraventions, particularly in the mining industry. They were also disappointed that the Minister appeared unwilling to make anti-scab legislation a priority at the provincial level.

Labour Holds 50th Anniversary Convention
The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Annual Convention begins November 1st in Regina. Over 640 delegates from across the province will meet to develop policy and strategy for the coming year. 2006 is also an election year for all officers of the Federation, including President, Treasurer and Recording Secretary.

SFL Praises Anti-Scab Vote
Yesterday Bill C-257 passed second reading in the House of Commons. The Bill will amend the Canada Labour Code to ban the use of replacement workers, or scabs, during strikes and lockouts.

Taxpayers Federation insults over 110,000 taxpayers in Saskatchewan
The President of the provincial organization representing more taxpayers in Saskatchewan than any other single organization in the province says that the Saskatchewan arm of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) contributes nothing to the province other than a constant barrage of negativity, and anti-citizen rhetoric.

Don't re-victimize the victims!
The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) is proposing a number of changes to the Workers' Compensation Act. In a brief to be presented today at the Workers' Compensation Board Committee of Review (WCB-COR) the SFL outlined proposals that would make the WCB more responsive in dealing with injured workers.

SFL issues Labour Day message

More than 130 years ago, Labour Day was created to honour the groundbreaking Ontario demonstrations of 1872. Marchers from 27 unions took to the streets and demanded that their brothers from the Toronto typographical union, who had struck for a nine-hour workday, be released from prison. Thousands of citizens flocked to the protests in support of the right to legally belong to a union. And the workers won.
