The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour's Shift Work Committee is dedicated to working jointly with the Balancing Work and Family initiative.
As a result of downsizing and restructuring, employees have more work to do in less time, according to the authors of Work Life Balance in Saskatchewan, Realities and Changes.
* Almost one third of Canadian workers are involved in some kind of shift work.
* Between eighty and ninety per cent of shift workers express concerns about fatigue and drowsiness on the job.
* Sleep, alertness, hunger and many other aspects of life are controlled by biological rhythms.
* Shift work upsets these rhythms and takes a toll on the long term health and well being of workers.
* Shift workers are more likely to experience a wide range of digestive problems and have higher than normal rates of heart disease.

Shift Work Study
The SFL has asked the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA Sask) to research and prepare a study on shift work in Saskatchewan. We plan to identify who works shift work, where they work and outline some of the experiences they encounter. We will itemize what steps shift workers can take to deal with the effects of their work schedules.
