January 31, 2012 - SFL Calls on Provincial Government to Reject Harper Pension Cuts
Thousands of Saskatchewan people are concerned today about looming changes to Canada’s universal pension plan, specifically Old Age Security (OAS). Despite the nation’s strong economic position, especially in relation to the US and Europe, and despite the Harper Government’s fondness for dolling out tax breaks to corporations, the Prime Minister has indicated that he intends to make cuts to Canada’s highly-regarded pension program.
Today’s Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) report, which found that Saskatchewan is the fastest growing jurisdiction for temporary foreign workers in Canada, is the latest in a series of indicators showing that the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) has become a first resort of employers looking to drive down wages.
Late last week, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 529, which represents working people in the Saskatoon area and further north, filed an unfair labour practice application against employer Alliance Energy Industrial.
